The Nile Project

A remarkable project, and a fabulous way to "do" ethnomusicology!! Kudos to Meklit Hadero and Mina Girgis (a colleague of mine from the Society for Ethnomusicology) for initiating this project!

Meklit is an Ethiopian-born singer-songwriter; Mina is an Egyptian-born ethnomusicologist. Both live in the San Francisco Bay area. Both grew up with the mythical Nile River as a major artery in their personal and family migrations. Now they have launched a project to seek out and bring together the musicians and cultures in the East African countries who share the Nile: Egypt, Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Uganda. Their goal is to record these musicians and tour both internationally and along the Nile with a group of these cultural specialists. Please learn more about the project and how to support it, follow them on their journey, or donate to their Kickstarter project if you choose to.

A very special thanks to Jamie Freedman for alerting me to this project. Be sure to read her post about this project and her interview with Meklit.
